Beans have long been at the heart of Kenya’s food system, serving as the country’s second most important staple crop after maize and forming part of millions of households’ daily meals.
Now, a new generation of improved bean varieties developed by researchers is expected to transform production by delivering higher yields, faster maturity, shorter cooking times and greater resilience to climate change, while helping Kenya reduce its dependence on imported beans.
Developed through a long-standing partnership between the Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO) and the Pan-Africa Bean Research Alliance (PABRA) programme of the Alliance of Bioversity International and CIAT, the newly released Waithera bean variety is being promoted as an innovation capable of improving food security, increasing farmers’ incomes and supporting sustainable agriculture.
